Artificial Intelligence (AI) Singularity: Have We Reached this State?

What is Singularity?

It has different meanings, in math and physics, it represents the infinite value which is incomprehensibly large. In the technological world, it deals with artificial intelligence. When artificial intelligence is exponentially more intelligent and quick to become artificial superintelligence, this is called a singularity.

The word “singularity” was popularized in 2005. John von Neumann, Vernor Vinge, and Ray Kurzweil define the term of the technological super intelligence, and they argue that it is difficult for present-day humans to predict how the human beings were living in the post-singularity world.

There is a difference of opinion among many notable personalities regarding AI singularity. Some of them are in favor of the extreme rise of singularity, and they are considering it beneficial for humanity. While others feel this uncontrolled rise a serious threat to the humanity’s future.

The Artificial Intelligence/AI singularity:

It would be the time when artificial intelligence and all the other advancement in technology will lead to a machine that will be smarter than human beings. Imagine that time when machines will take over the world and humans have nothing to do, Elon Musk warns about this kind of future. The proponents of singularity consider it an opportunity for the human beings to improve.

Elon Musk is working and trying his best to make sure that humanity can keep up with artificial intelligence.

When will human reach singularity?

It is the most repeated point of discussion nowadays, when will the artificial intelligence become greater than human intelligence? The famous Singularity proponents like Ray Kurzweil, Google’s director of engineering, said, “2029 is the consistent date I have predicted for when an AI will pass a valid Turing test and therefore achieve human levels of intelligence. I have set the date 2045 for the ‘Singularity’ which is when we will multiply our effective intelligence a billion fold by merging with the intelligence we have created.

According to Kurzweil, technologies are now becoming cheaper and their complex computation power increases at an extreme rate. Thus, AI also increases exponentially in its ability to mimic the brain, which enables us to create an artificial copy of our “soul”, so that we can live forever in robotic bodies that neither age nor die.

Vernor Vinge and Ray Kurzweil are looking forward to the time when the world is all revolving around artificial intelligence. They have argued that the exponential success rate of smarter and smarter machines will soon overturn human capabilities. These devices will possess super artificial intelligence that will doubt the presence of human beings in the world.

Some of the personalities predict that the dawn of super-intelligent machines will happen by 2047. For Kurzweil, the process towards this singularity has already begun.

Elon Musk on Singularity

He is the man who is considering singularity as a matter of alarm and concern for humanity’s future. He is concerned about the fact that AI is predicted to bowl humankind at an exponential rate, afterward, human beings would be considered inferior as compared to AI in their capacity.

Musk suggested a conventional idea: the neural lace. It is actually a device that is intended to grow with a brain. The primary purpose of neural lace is to optimize mental output through a brain-computer interface. It will allow the human mind to effortlessly access the internet so that it can keep up with artificially intelligent systems. He is confident about the efficiency of the neural lace that it could push our cognitive performance to levels that are comparable to that of AI.

The artificial intelligence singularity is the phenomenon of today’s world and will progress more in the near future. The truth of today’s technology like supercomputers, wireless network, and artificial intelligence is that it will inevitably make its way to the general public in the future. Even though these technologies are now becoming cheaper and more widespread, we fail to imagine how it will change our society.

The transition period of singularity is the machine interdependence. Singularity will be a future of unparalleled human-machine synthesis. The devices under development work by replicating the way that our brain cells communicate with one another. The technology envisioned is based on 15 years of academic research. Human superintelligence is only a matter of time now.
